- Official thesis title: Flood risk assessment in the context of climate change for sustainable development of Can Tho city’s urban core
- Major: Environment and Sustainable Development
- Code: 9440301.04
- Supervisors: Associate Professsor Bui Ngoc Quy and Associate Professor Nguyen Hieu.
- Summary of the new findings of the thesis:
1) The Aim and Research Subject
Research Aim
Assess the risk, impacts and consequences of urban flooding on socio-economy in the study area, combined with climate change scenarios to determine the impacts of climate change on flood risks.
Research Subject
The research object of the thesis is the issues of socio-economic risks due to urban flooding under the impact of climate change.
2) Research Methods
– Modeling method: the flooding situation of the core urban area of Can Tho city is modeled using the hydraulic modeling method.
– Social risk assessment method due to flooding: Social flood risk is assessed through the combination of 3 factors: Hazard, Vulnerability and Exposure. These three factors are built and combined through spatial analysis on GIS.
– Economic flood risk assessment method: Economic risk is determined by spatial analysis combined with economic damage survey data in the study area.
– Method of assessing the impact of climate change on natural disaster risk: Identify changes according to climate change scenarios to build inputs for the flood model, the results of flood level and flood hazard for the scenarios in 2030 and 2050 are determined. From here, the results of socio-economic risk assessment are calculated and compared.
– Inheritance method
– Spatial analysis method on GIS
– Investigation method – sociological statistics
3) Main Findings and Conclusion
New finidng of the thesis
– Researched and developed a suitable toolkit to assess socio-economic risks caused by flooding in the core urban area of Can Tho city.
– Applied a toolkit to assess socio-economic risks caused by flooding, thereby determining the impacts of climate change on the core urban area of Can Tho city.
Scientific and practical significance
– The study contributes to clarifying the theoretical basis for assessing urban flood risk in cities, especially urban areas in the Mekong Delta, qualitatively and quantitatively assessing risks and damages that can be caused by urban flooding and climate change.
– The study recommends the possibility of applying urban flood risk assessment in the decision-making process of urban development planners and flood prevention measures.
The research results are valuable references for urban managers, disaster prevention and climate change response with the goal of sustainable development in urban areas of the Mekong Delta. – The results of qualitative and quantitative risk assessment can support solutions to adapt and mitigate urban flooding in the core urban area of Can Tho to support the city in responding to flooding and climate change.
